“Sven Johne’s collages delve into the economic and geopolitical realities”, writes frieze about the VISIT scholar - and hits the nail on the head.
His photo collage "Sassnitz - Navel of the World", created for VISIT, impressively shows the disruption of urban society in Sassnitz - a town on his home island of Rügen. In it, Johne contrasts images from a bird's-eye view with personal statements by the residents, which rise up as speech bubbles.
The exhibition presents East Germany as a ‘model region’, in which widespread structural change, political disenchantment and isolation manifest more evidently than elsewhere.
The exhibition at the Nagel Draxler Gallery in Cologne runs until 20 August.
